How High School Students Can Get Ahead by Earning College Credit Early

If you’re a parent of a high school student thinking about college preparation, there’s one strategy that many families overlook — but it can make a big difference both academically and financially.
Working ahead.
Specifically, earning college credit while still in high school.
This is exactly what I discuss in Chapter 6 of my book, Your Next Big Step: The Complete Manual for Christian Parents and Students Preparing for College. When students approach their high school years strategically, they can position themselves for a smoother transition into college.
And in many cases, they can also save time and reduce future tuition costs.
Why Earning College Credit in High School Matters
Many high schools today offer opportunities for students to complete advanced coursework that can translate into college credit.
When done wisely, this approach can help students:
Reduce the number of classes needed in college
Lower overall college expenses
Lighten the workload during freshman year
Create flexibility for internships or additional majors
Build confidence before entering college-level academics
But this strategy isn’t about rushing through life or pushing students too fast.
It’s about stewardship and preparation.
Ephesians 5:16 reminds us to make the most of our opportunities and redeem the time. That principle applies directly to how students approach their education during high school.
Different Ways Students Can Earn College Credit While in High School
Parents are often surprised by the number of pathways available today. Some schools provide programs that mirror college-level coursework, while others allow students to take actual college classes before graduation.
Some of the most common options include:
Advanced academic courses that culminate in an exam determining whether college credit is awarded
Dual enrollment programs where students take real college classes while still in high school
Early college pathways that allow students to graduate with credits already completed
Each option can be incredibly beneficial when aligned with your student’s goals and readiness.
Important Questions Parents Should Ask Before Choosing These Programs
While earning college credit early can be a great strategy, it’s important to approach it thoughtfully.
Here are a few key questions I encourage families to consider:
Will the credit transfer to the colleges my student is considering?
Is my student academically ready for the rigor of college-level coursework?
Does this fit with my student’s long-term academic and career goals?
Will this create balance, or unnecessary stress?
These questions help ensure that the decision is intentional rather than rushed.
The Real Goal: Preparation, Not Just Acceleration
One of the biggest misconceptions about earning college credit early is that it’s all about finishing faster.
That’s not the real goal.
The goal is intentional preparation.
When students work ahead wisely, they create opportunities later in their college journey, such as:
Studying abroad
Pursuing a double major
Completing internships
Exploring research opportunities
Maintaining a healthier academic balance
But wisdom is important here. Taking on too much too early can lead to burnout or unnecessary pressure. Parents play a key role in helping students find the right balance between challenge and capacity.
Preparing Now Shapes Your Student’s Next Season
One of the themes I emphasize throughout Your Next Big Step: The Complete Manual for Christian Parents and Students Preparing for College is that preparation for college doesn’t begin after graduation.
It begins now — during the high school years.
When students approach their time with purpose and planning, they step into college feeling confident instead of overwhelmed.
Encourage your student to pray, plan, and carefully evaluate opportunities. When preparation reflects maturity, it sets the stage for success both academically and spiritually.
