Parents carry tremendous influence — but teenagers also benefit from additional wise counsel.
“ Whoever walks with the wise grows wise. ” Proverbs 13: 20 If graduation is coming up, guide your teen to be intentional about who they walk with.
Challenge them to name two to three mentors who are examples of living with integrity, enjoying their work, and demonstrating values that you’ve instilled in your teen. A mentor should never undermine your parenting, but should complement it.
Find mentors who:
Enjoy their job
Speak truth
Give perspective, but don’t try to control
Are available and willing
Healthy mentors allow students to gain a real-life perspective. They can also ask mentors questions they may feel uncomfortable asking their parents.
Help your teen understand that mentorship will ebb and flow. Different seasons of life will call for different needs. That is ok. Teach them to celebrate each season of mentorship they experience.
Providing your teen with these types of relationships shows that you have confidence in your parenting abilities. It doesn’t show that you lack wisdom. In fact, it shows them that wisdom can be multiplied when shared with others.
Dependence is not the goal.
Development is.
When your teen hears wisdom and truth spoken by multiple voices, they will be FAR more likely to make wise decisions on their own.
