I don’t think I’m alone when I say that every once in a while, my wife and I find ourselves silently contemplating the same question, “Am I losing my teenager?” They are thinking for themselves. They are making adult decisions. They are preparing to leave the nest.
Don’t despair. Your influence isn’t ending, it’s changing.
“As you guide a child, so he will be; when he grows up, he will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
The groundwork you have laid spiritually, emotionally, and educationally is growing up. Now is not the time to back off; now is the time to begin moving from supervisor to supporter.
The senior year of high school needs to be marked by intentional dialogue. Topics of conversation like faith, finances, friendships, and future plans should be discussed at the dinner table. Ask questions. Listen. Influence at this stage isn’t about your power; it’s about your presence.
It’s important to note that this worldly pressure doesn’t let up after graduation. Many students experience true freedom for the first time. Friend groups and living environments will influence their decision-making. When everything around them is changing and evolving, your steady and calm example of faith will help keep them grounded. Keep praying for them. Keep letting your faith lead by example.
Continue to loosen the grip…but don’t let go.
You are not losing your teenager, you are launching them.
And most launches are determined by how well they’re propelled.
